Lots of smart, well-informed people don't protect themselves from HIV. Why do people find excuses to take a risk? Here are some possible reasons:
-Sexual inexperience: Some people haven't had sex before, or have had sex with only 1 or 2 other partners. So when they do decide to have sex, they have to work out all kinds of personal and mechanical things. Talking about safer sex or adding a condom into the mix may feel like too much to do.
-The power of desire: Sexual desire can be really strong. A lot of it happens in a part of your brain that is not very interested in being rational or planning ahead.
The thrill of independence: College is a time to discover yourself. It might feel like the person you've always been inside is finally showing up. With all this new freedom, it can be tough to choose to follow a bunch of rules about safer sex.
